Gapan RevisitedLeaving not only a memory but a legacy of a healthier and a happier communityby Theresa Simpelo-Cain RNLast January 12-23, 1998, our group of missioners, went back to Gapan Philippines to continue the medical mission we started there a year ago. We arrived weary , sore and anxious but at the same time eager to revisit Gapan District Hospital and to pick up the pieces we have left off from last year’s missionary efforts. As always, the experience was memorable, inspiring and heartening. I would like to share with you some of the highlights of our trip. Most memorable eyes: Olive whose vision we restored last year after being blind for 8 years, is just like any other 16 year old. Active, tireless, and adventurous , she scored “perfect” on her follow up eye exam! Best tears of happiness ! Most memorable smile: Bernardo - had bilateral cleft lip repair last year. He came back for repair of his cleft palate Saddest moment: A four year old, with a mass about the size of an egg that spanned between both her eyes. Surgical treatment was negated because her case was considered too high of a risk due to possible brain involvement Happiest moment: To see Eduardo back who can now raise is head up to look at sky and walk better. Before we released his burnt contractures last year, his chin was attached to his chest, and his thighs to his legs. Lesson: Count your blessings; don’t take anything for granted! Most frustrating: Delaying patient care due to lack of medications/anesthesia Proudest moment: Day one at the hospital and observing the clean wards, ready OR suites and the staff excited to see us back Most Satisfying: Made new friends, rekindled old ones and coming home knowing that we are leaving not only a memory but a legacy of a healthier and happier community. Next assignment! Mission l999 Puerto Princesa, Philippines !
