President's Message
The induction ceremony was the highlight of the Christmas party, which was well attended by fellow nurses and guests from the Philippine Medical Society and volunteers of the January 1997 Gapan Medical Mission. That evening, I took on the honor and huge responsibility as the new president of the PNA with fierce determination. Two summers have passed, now, it is cold again and those times have gone by so quickly. I must admit, I was worried of the lengthy term! During my acceptance speech that night, I made mention of my graying hair and that I would probably need a double dose of Clairol during my term. I viewed the acceptance as close to an ordeal but I was confident that the officers and members would help me through it- and they have. Graying hair continues, no matter what , that's the reality of life but I have handled it with just a half dose of Clairol! As I review the events of 1997 and 1998, I can say with confidence that the PNA , as a relatively young professional, non-profit organization, has undergone a lot of growth, maturity and has performed very well in achieving the objectives it has set. In 1997, there was a 19% increase in the membership. Representation to the out of state PNAA convention likewise increased. In addition, our Kansas City Delegation to the San Jose Diego Convention in June 1998 won first place in the coveted Talent Show. The official logo and stationery came out in 1997 , and an outstanding , full scale web site was launched, the first among the 23 chapter members. Fund raising efforts have reached a high in 1997 generating an income of $6,480, half of it came from caroling. By laws were revised to allow nurses of non-Filipino ethnic origin to become members of the Association. The PNA's quarterly newsletter, "Tanglaw" was transformed into a more professional and artistic work. The PNA's commitment to community through education continues with the CPR class given to 59 participants from St. Pius High School in March 1998. The association's pledge of $25,000 ($19,000 come from individual members' pledges) to the Filipino Cultural Building Fund marks a milestone to its commitment to its roots. With more funding, I hope that the Filipino Cultural Center will become a reality and house the future office of the PNA.. These are the highlights of our achievements for 1997 and 1998 and there are many more significant accomplishments. All of these were achieved because of the concerted efforts of the officers, committee chairs, and members. I want to thank the following individuals who have unselfishly assisted me in my tasks during my 1997-1998 term: Ernie Rosas - President-electI want to express my deep appreciation to our spouses , children, friends and members who have in any way participated in the PNA activities . Remember our Christmas caroling? Remember the golf tournaments and our public television appearances? Can you recall the fun and laughter we shared during our dinner dance presentations of the "Grease", "Macho Man","Sister Act", and "First Wives Club"? Great entertainers with class !!! Without their talents, the Production Company would not be complete! To the incoming officers of the PNA for the year 1999-2000, ably headed by Ernie Rosas, congratulations! I am confident that you are ready to continue the PNA journey with more enthusiasm and determination. I know this for a fact . Ernie has already set an executive meeting and Marilyn has invited me to her first social meeting! An impressive jumpstart !!! Way to go .... I thought I was retiring for a while, but for a worthwhile cause, experience and fun ....... definitely ....... I'M IN NOT OUT. Sonia Somera Tumanut |
