PNAGKC SUPPORTS RECORD FOUR SCHOLARS
by Elvie Leone, PNAGKC Scholarship Committee Chairman

The PNAGKC Scholarship Program rose to unprecedented heights in 2005 by funding four nursing scholars for the first time in the PNAGKC's history.

In spring, the Scholarship Committee took the first step towards this milestone by voting to open an additional three-year scholarship award while continuing the existing award for its third and final year.  This award is held by Ms. Madeline Bonifacio of UERMMMC College of Nursing in Quezon City.

Letters were sent to thirteen universities and colleges throughout the Philippines, resulting in seven applications.  Of these, three met the scholarship program's criteria for academic excellence, high moral standards, community service, appropriate grade level status, and financial need.

After rigorous review by the Scholarship Committee, the new three-year award was made to Mr. Arnold Terrado of Bicol University in Legazpi City.  However, the decision was difficult, since all three finalists were highly qualified and deserving.

Fortunately, in August, the PNAGKC received a restricted donation designated specifically to provide two additional, one-time tuition grants to the remain

ing qualified students, including Ms. Jan Marize Cruz, also of Bicol University, and Mr. Bienson Riputola of St. Paul College of Ilocos Sur.  These awards were presented as one-time grants only, with the possibility of renewal for one additional semester pending the students' continued fulfillment of the scholarship program requirements, and the PNAGKC's receipt of additional donations.  The students and their respective institutions received very clear written notification of these contingencies to avoid any confusion or ongoing commitment by the PNAGKC should funds not be available.

Long term, the Scholarship Committee's goal is to maintain the two three-year scholarships simultaneously.  Effective 2005, the scholarship grant money was increased to $300 per semester to offset the student's increasing tuition fee.

This year's accomplishments became a reality through the vision and dedicated service of the Scholarship Committee members.  Many thanks and congratulations for a job well done to Alice Alcazaren, Helen Austria, Arvin Figueroa, Irma Labre-Wright, Marilyn Moyo, Emilie Turalba, and Mayie Vilkins.
