PNAA Fifth North Central Regional Conference
By Ruth Knutter

The Fifth North Central Regional Conference of the Philippine Nurses Association of America was held in Indianapolis, Indiana on April 23-24 . The theme was Celebrating Global Excellence in Nursing Leadership, Education and Practice. The conference was designed to provide leadership, management, professional and clinical skills to survive changes in the work environment , achieve excellence and celebrate personal success. The topics included Leadership in Nursing, DNA Forensic Medicine,Cultural Competence, and Synergy Model in Nursing.

The keynote speaker was Dr.Divina Grossman, a UST graduate and is the Director of School of Nursing at the Florida International University. An  inspiring speaker who not only emphasized the need to asses our own per

sonal and professional strengths, assets  and weaknesses but also shared the timeless and truthful message that all of us can contribute in solving  the leadership crisis  in nursing by becoming mentors to others. We are where we are now because someone, in our past believed in us .I  share her passion to continue learning and achieve advanced degrees.

The social activities were fun and exhilarating. Our Hagibis  presentation with Ernie as the star, could have easily won the accolade for the best talent show but since awards are no longer given, we settled for an evening filled with fun and camaraderie of fellow Filipinos . It was one big fiesta feeling all over again of rejoicing, celebrating, remembering and definitely,  heart and soul warming.

The friendly, genuine  and welcoming hospitality of  the PNAA  Indiana host chapter  was very impressive. We can

learn from them as we prepare for the big national assembly of PNAA in 2005.

Fully stocked and loaded with food that could have lasted us a month,  some of the delegates  took the road from Kansas City to Indiana. The drive was long but pleasurable  but  it provided the opportunity for great  conversations and meeting of the minds.

This is the second  PNAA conference I have attended and I am glad I came.  To know fellow  PNAGKC delegates in a more personal basis is very  rewarding .
Oftentimes I am asked how  I keep young!  Assuming that they are telling the truth, I share with them my secret. It is the company I keep. The  fun loving, spirited, young, smart  individuals, like the members  and supporter of PNAGKC!    Beth and  Ernie Rosas , Joy Doolin, , Amy Valera ,  Irma Labre  ,Tess Laoruangroch  Alice ,and Ed Alcazaren.
